What is DLT, really?

DLT stands for Distributed Ledger Technology. In India, it's the system TRAI built so that every commercial SMS is registered before it leaves a telco network. Think of it as Aadhaar — but for your SMS sender name and the exact words you're sending.

1. Register your business

You become a Principal Entity (PE) on any operator portal — Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL. You get a PE ID. One-time, ~₹5,000.

2. Register your sender name

Your 6-character Header (e.g. MSGHUB). This is what shows on the customer's phone instead of a number.

3. Register every message

Each unique SMS body becomes a Template. Variables like {#var#} stay flexible. You get a Template ID back.

⚠️
If you skip DLT, your SMS is silently dropped.

Indian telcos (Jio/Airtel/Vi/BSNL) check every SMS against DLT before delivery. No registered PE, no registered Header, no matched Template — it never reaches the handset, even if your aggregator's API said "success".

Pricing, but the honest version

We don't add a single paisa on your SMS.

Most "DLT SMS platforms" buy bulk from aggregators and resell to you with a 20–40% markup baked in. That's how the industry works. That's not how MsgHub works.

Typical reseller platform
Real aggregator cost · ₹0.14
+ Hidden markup · You pay ₹0.20
You can't see the aggregator's invoice. You can't switch routes. The platform decides your price, sometimes mid-month.
MsgHub way No markup
Aggregator cost · ₹0.14 (you pay them)
Flat platform fee
You see your aggregator's actual invoice. Switch routes any time. Our fee is a flat monthly platform charge — independent of volume.
Your contract, your rate
Negotiate with MSG91 / Kaleyra / Gupshup directly. We never sit in the price chain.
Switch aggregators any time
No lock-in. Better rate elsewhere? Paste new credentials, done in 10 minutes.
Multi-route fallback
Route OTPs to fastest carrier, promos to cheapest. Split traffic by Header or template.

Connect your aggregator to MsgHub

Five steps. Roughly 20 minutes if your DLT IDs are already approved. No code, no developer needed for the basic setup.

1

Become a Principal Entity on DLT

Sign up on any one operator portal — they share data so you only register once. Most teams pick Jio TrueConnect or Vi DLT.

  • PAN + GST + signed authorisation letter
  • Fee: ~₹5,000 (one-time, refundable security deposit varies)
  • You get a PE ID in 1–3 working days
2

Register Header + Templates

Header = the 6-letter sender name (e.g. SHOPLY). Templates = the exact body of each SMS with variable slots.

  • Pick category: Service-Implicit, Service-Explicit, Promotional, Transactional
  • Use {#var#} for variable parts
  • Approval: ~24–48 hours per template
3

Get aggregator credentials

Sign up with any DLT-approved aggregator. Ask them for either an HTTP API key or SMPP credentials (host, port, system-id, password).

  • HTTP API → easier, ~1s per SMS
  • SMPP → faster, persistent connection, good for high volume / OTP
  • Ask them to map your PE ID to the new account
4

Add it in MsgHub Settings

Go to Settings → SMS Channels. Pick your aggregator from the dropdown, paste the credentials, paste your Header and the approved Template IDs.

  • Encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM)
  • Test connection button → instant feedback
  • Per-tenant: each customer manages their own DLT IDs
5

Send a test SMS

From the dashboard, hit Send test. Pick a template, fill the variables, send to your own number. If it lands with your Header showing as the sender — you're live. If it bounces, the error tells you exactly which DLT field didn't match.

# Or trigger via REST from your own code: POST https://api.msghub.info/v1/sms/send Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TENANT_KEY { "to": "+9198XXXXXXXX", "template_id": "1707XXXXXXXXXXXXXX", "variables": { "name": "Riya", "otp": "482910" } }

Quick checklist

Before you go live

Print this. Tick as you go.

PE registration complete on at least one operator
PE ID in your records
Header registered & approved
6 characters · category-correct (e.g. transactional header for OTP)
Every SMS body has a Template ID
Including marketing variants — DLT matches char-by-char (except {#var#})
Consent flow in place for Promotional category
Customer opt-in record (date, source, channel) — TRAI can audit it
Aggregator account mapped to your PE ID
Confirm with their onboarding team — common cause of "Invalid PEID" failures
Test SMS delivered to a non-DND number
DLR returns DELIVERED within seconds — not just API 200 OK
Fallback aggregator configured (optional but recommended)
If primary fails, MsgHub auto-routes through secondary within the same Header
Frequently asked

Common DLT questions

Does MsgHub add a markup on my SMS price?

No. You bring your own DLT-registered aggregator and pay them their published rate directly. MsgHub charges a flat platform fee only — we never sit between you and your aggregator's invoice.

Is DLT mandatory for every business sending SMS in India?

Yes. Since TRAI's TCCCPR regulation, every commercial SMS to an Indian mobile number must originate from a registered Principal Entity with an approved Header and an approved Template. Even OTPs. Even single transactional messages.

Which DLT portal should I register on?

Any one is enough — operators sync the registration data. Jio TrueConnect and Vi DLT have the smoothest UX. Airtel and BSNL also work. Pick one, register once.

How long does template approval take?

Usually 24–48 hours per template. Service-Implicit (e.g. OTPs, order updates) gets approved faster than Promotional. Match the category correctly the first time — wrong category = rejection.

Can I use multiple aggregators on one MsgHub account?

Yes. Configure a primary and a fallback. Or split: route OTPs through Aggregator A (fastest) and promotional broadcasts through Aggregator B (cheapest). MsgHub picks per-message.

What does an SMS actually cost me through MsgHub?

Exactly what your aggregator quoted you. ₹0.12–₹0.20 per SMS for transactional is the typical 2026 range in India. MsgHub itself charges a flat platform fee — see pricing. We don't take a cut per message.

Does MsgHub help me register on DLT?

We don't register on your behalf — by law the PE registration must be done by the entity itself. But we give you a checklist, a template review before submission, and we'll sit with you on a screen-share for the first registration if you want.

What if my SMS bounces with "Template mismatch"?

The body you sent doesn't byte-match the approved template. Common cause: extra space, smart quotes from copy-paste, an emoji not in the original template. MsgHub validates this before hitting the aggregator and tells you the exact diff.

Do you support SMPP for high-volume OTP?

Yes — full SMPP 3.4 client. Persistent bind, configurable window size, automatic reconnect, DLR handling. Suitable for OTP volumes > 100k/day.

Bring your aggregator.
We'll do the rest.

15-minute call. We'll walk through your DLT setup, recommend an aggregator tier for your volume, and have you sending test SMS the same day.
